was trying to rid my phone of old messages on Sunday (Mother’s day), when I came across this story of a woman who lost her children to incest, abortion and then suicide. She and her husband have lived with the guilt of choosing their career over raising a son and a daughter until the husband eventually died of depression. Not knowing how much longer she has to live with the pain in her heart, she decided to share her story for other parents to draw lessons from. Reading this story again gave me shudders.
Though the authenticity of this story cannot be ascertained, it did give me a whole new perspective to mother’s day as I tried to imagine what could be going on in the mind of the woman in this story on a day like this. The reality of mother’s day celebration is that it carries with it a mix of emotions for different mothers.
To the one expecting a child of her own, who many have termed barren, its a moment of grief and despair as she feels forsaken but God’s word brings hope.
“Sing, O barren, you who have not borne! Break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who have not laboured with child! For more are the children of the married woman,” says The Lord. – Isa. 54:1
To the one who is devastated at the thought of the loss of her child(ren), God is able to heal your pain and comfort you.
“For The Lord will comfort Zion, He will comfort her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of The Lord; joy and gladness will be found in it, thanksgiving and the voice of melody.
So the ransomed of The Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy and gladness; sorrow and sighing shall flee.” – Isa. 51:3, 11
To the one who feels inadequate about her parenting capability, (this sure resonates with me.) The scripture is assuring you and I that failure on our part may be sure but God’s mercy and faithfulness is guaranteed never to fail.
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” – Lam. 3:22-23
To those who feel condemned over bad choices like abortion and probably believe what they are suffering presently is the punishment for their sins. Dont allow the devil hang condemnation on you, trust God’s word that says,
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ” – 1Jn 1:9
“Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.” – Ps.32:1
To the one who is heart broken and confused about how to win her son back to The Lord, rest on prayer, the password to breaking every form of barrier and be hopeful, for the living word promises:
“Therefore do not cast away your confidence which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise.” – Heb.10: 35-36
“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, for My anger has turned away from him.” – Hosea 14:4
Are you in pain, do you feel unappreciated, are you consumed by guilt or just heartbroken? Turn to God for healing, acceptance and love.
